Agriculture Equipment Auxiliary Systems
Agriculture equipment like the windrower shown here are becoming increasingly electrified with the incorporation of brush and brushless electric motor-powered accessories. Benefits in increased efficiency of power usage and equipment uptime can be significant.
One example is a rotating wand device on this windrower powered by an Allied Motion gearmotor. The wand helps keep field debris from accumulating and clogging the radiator screen. It’s an example of how Allied Motion solutions keep downtime to a minimum in agriculture equipment.
Aircraft Emergency Fuel Boost Pump
Many small propeller-driven aircraft benefit from a two-speed pump that maintains fuel pressure while cruising, but boosts fuel delivery for takeoff and landing.
One aircraft pump manufacturer consulted Allied Motion seeking such a two-speed fuel pump motor solution. Allied’s design team engineered a unique solution in which a standard Endurance brush DC motor was modified to accept two different voltages, enabling our customer to supply a reliable two-speed pump that doesn’t stall, as was the case with some other motors they tried previously.
All Terrain Tracked Wheelchair
The Trackchair™ is a unique zero-turn-radius, all-terrain wheelchair developed to enable wheelchair-bound people, including veterans, to enjoy the freedom of getting off-road. The Trackchair can go places not previously possible for wheelchair users like woods and beaches, in poor conditions like mud, sand and snow.
Allied Motion’s RAD36 series right-angle DC gearmotors power the Trackchair, enabling it to safely carry up to a 350 lb (159 kg) person at up to 5 mph (8 km/h) while negotiating inclines, depressions, debris and other off-road obstacles and conditions.
ATV Power Steering Actuator
Electronic Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS) is found today in many off-road sports ATVs as well as their on-road counterparts. EPAS is also used extensively in marine, agricultural, and material handling vehicles to cite a few other applications.
EPAS is more fuel efficient than hydraulic-based systems, and “smart” systems like Allied Motion’s POW-R STEER® offer the advantage of tailored steering assistance performance that optimizes ride and handling for any vehicle operating condition.
Automotive LPG System Pump
As environmental concerns rise and the use of alternative fuels is encouraged, Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) systems are increasingly being deployed in taxis, transit buses, and similar vehicle fleets. The pump, internal to the LPG tank, is a critical element in LPG (Autogas) systems.
Allied Motion engineers developed custom versions of our small outer rotor brushless DC motors with integrated drive electronics specifically to meet the unique demands of Autogas systems. These systems are deployed around the globe helping to reduce vehicle emissions.
Autonomous Vehicle Laser Sensor
DARPA’s annual “Urban Challenge" vehicle race spurs autonomous vehicle technology development. The implications for auto-drive cars and unmanned military operational vehicles are clear. Five of the top six finishers, including the winner, in the 2007 Challenge used the 64-element LIDAR sensor shown here that generates more than 1.3 million distance points per second.
Allied Motion engineers worked closely with the LIDAR maker to provide the custom torque motors needed for this sensor system.
Auxiliary Unit Fuel Pump
In the control of gas turbine engines used in aircraft auxiliary power units (APU) that must operate at tens-of-thousands of rpm, fuel pump frequency response and reliability are two key design parameters.
Allied Motion engineers, working closely with the turbine manufacturer of this gerotor-type fuel pump, optimized the parameters of the pump motor, an Allied Motion Megaflux brushless torque motor, resulting in an economical solution that exceeded performance and reliability goals.
Boat Gyro Stabilization System
Vessel roll caused by rough seas is an experience that can take the fun out of boating. With a dynamic gyro stabilization system on board, however, skippers and passengers can focus on pleasant pursuits on the water.
Allied Motion engineers developed a custom Megaflux torque motor and servo drive system to drive the unique Seakeeper Gyro stabilization system. The motor and custom servo drive spin the gyro flywheel, contained in a vacuum chamber, at high constant speed.
Boat Hydraulic Steering Pump
Manual steering of power boats becomes difficult the larger and more powerful the boat, especially those outfitted with multiple engines. That’s when helm hydraulic assist systems become a necessity for good control and safe boating.

CO2 & NOx Emission Reduction Pump
Strict emission regulations like Euro 6 and US Tier 2 Bin 5 have lead to the deployment of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology for heavy duty, and even passenger, diesel-powered vehicles. SCR dramatically reduces CO2, NOx and particulate matter in exhaust gases. SCR technology transforms harmful vehicle exhaust gases into harmless nitrogen and water.
Allied Motion engineers worked closely with a pump manufacturer to develop specialized compact brushless DC motors to drive a highly integrated motor-pump used in SCR systems.
Construction Equipment HVAC Systems
Off-road vehicles like construction equipment require high levels of reliability and durability. Equipment downtime is a very costly event for machines that oftentimes must run 16 hours per day, or more, seven days per week.
Allied Motion's design team developed speicific product lines of DC brush and brushless motors that meet the extreme operating requirements of fan and blower systems in construction equipment HVAC systems, and that provide extended life, improved noise suppression, excellent shock and vibration resistance, and improved water sealing characteristics, as well.
Drive-by-Wire Control System
Drive-by-wire technology, such as used in the Novanta concept car shown here, replaces the heavy, cumbersome traditional mechanical and hydraulic components with accurate, efficient electro-mechanical control systems. Allied Motion supplied customized brushless torque motors for integration into the steering and braking systems of the Novanta.
Dual-Arm Military Robot
Shown here mounted on the Talon mobile base is a dual-arm robotic manipulator system that is capable of lifting 110 lb (50 kg) and handling a myriad of field missions with humanlike handling abilities.
Each arm assembly utilizes Allied Motion brushless torque motors to achieve 20 degrees of freedom, giving the arm unmatched dexterity. The arm has a load capacity of 50+ lb (22.7 kg) but a total mass of only 16 lb (7.3kg).
Fuel Cell Cooling System
Allied Motion has helped to develop advanced vehicle propulsion systems, such as Ford's Focus FCV (Fuel Cell Vehicle) prototype shown here. We supplied custom brushless torque motors and digital drives for the cooling pump and fan systems in the Focus FCV.
GPS-based Agricultural Vehicle Steering
One of the most successful tools available for modern precision farming is the GPS-based steering system. The EZ-Pilot® system by Trimble provides high-accuracy steering of agriculture equipment utilizing a compact electric motor actuator directly mounted to the vehicle steering wheel. The EZ-Pilot responds to commands from a GPS-based guidance system. The system is employed in both broadacre as well as high-accuracy row crop farming applications.
An Allied Motion Megaflux brushless torque motor with integrated drive electronics is at the heart of the EZ-Pilot system.
Heavy-Duty Truck HVAC Air Moving Systems
HVAC systems in “million-mile” trucks are required above all else to be reliable and quiet. The heart of these systems is motor used to power the blower or fan subsystem, which needs to be unquestionably reliable and provide very long service life.
Allied Motion custom-designs and manufactures fan and blower motors in both brush and brushless DC versions specifically to meet the demands of the air-moving and condenser subsystems in both over-the-road and off-road vehicles.
High Performance Racing Fuel Pump
High performance vehicles such as drag racers require consistent high rates of fuel delivery to avoid mid-track “lay down” due to a lack of sufficient fuel. For example, an 800-HP engine needs more than 0.1 gallon every second of a run.
Allied Motion works with fuel pump manufactures to provide custom DC motors for their high performance electric fuel pumps that must meet the voracious fuel appetites of high performance sport racing vehicles.
High Performance Racing Motorcycle Alternator
Minimizing total engine mass In racing motorcycles is of paramount importance because ever extra ounce reduces acceleration, and, hence, performance. Designers are therefore very keen to shed any unnecessary mass.
Allied Motion engineers helped by redesigning one of their brushless torque motors for use as a racing motorcycle alternator. The new design enabled a reduction in mass of nearly 90% and inertia of about 80%, resulting in a substantially more compact and lighter generator.
IED Disposal Military Robot
Improvised Explosive Device (IED) disposal robots perform a critical role on today's battlefield. These robots need to be extremely rugged and reliable yet lightweight and easy to maintain in the field.
Allied Motion’s engineers developed versions of our Quantum and frameless HT servo motors for the propulsion and arm axes of an IED search and disposal robot. Allied's design team optimized the motors in order to maximize torque production at lower speed and give the robots reserve power for climbing uneven terrains and rock strewn slopes.
JSOW Missile Seeker Head
Allied Motion engineers designed a high resolution motor-encoder, limited-angle actuator to meet the extremely demanding requirements of modern smart standoff weapons such as the JSOW missile shown here.
The Allied Motion custom actuator positions an infrared imaging seeker, a critical part of the weapon’s precision autonomous guidance system. The actuator includes an 18-bit absolute encoder and limited-angle brushless torque motor. The encoder has a high bandwidth 2000 Hz (word rate) serial interface for high resolution and high speed positioning.
Material Handling Carts & AGVs
Material movement in factories and warehouses is becoming easier and safer with the advent of robotic material handling carts. Often referred to as AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicles), these semi-to-fully autonomous vehicles have become increasingly popular, especially in automated warehouses, as their control and drive systems have advanced in capability.
Allied Motion engineers have developed several wheel drive systems, including powered casters and transaxles in both brush and brushless DC versions that are used for both primary drive in AGVs and for power assist service in pushers, tuggers, and material handling carts.
Mobile Remotely Operated Weapons System
The CROWS (Common Remote Operated Weapons Station) weapons turret allows a gunner to remain protected inside his vehicle while accurately operating a computer-stabilized, laser-aimed weapon.
Allied Motion's Megaflux torque motors power three sets of azimuth and elevation axes in the system, while a housed Quantum servo motor powers the weapon's cocking actuator.
Mobile SATCOM Motion System
Broadband communications with on-the-move vehicles on land, at sea, or in the air, are now a reality thanks in part to advanced motion systems that enable very accurate satellite tracking, even as vehicles experience high dynamic levels of motion and vibration.
Allied Motion’s frameless Megaflux torque motors enable tightly integrated yaw, pitch and roll axes in SATCOM antenna systems. Mated servo drives are also integrated with the motors in some cases making for extremely compact designs.
Multi-Mission Military Robot
Accommodating multiple heavy payload types, and able to perform multiple mission types (explosive ordnance disposal, route clearing, reconnaissance, and more), the Warrior robot rapidly negotiates rough terrain and even climbs stairs while handling payloads up to 68 kg.

Patient Transport Equipment
Developers of a new-concept patient transfer bed – a motorized gurney with a built-in transfer belt that enables a single caregiver to transfer a patient within a medical facility without having to physically lift the patient – sought Allied Motion's assistance to motorize the 1400 lb. bed. Two traction drive wheels, a steering drive and two height adjusters were needed.
Allied Motion responded with custom versions of our EnduraMax brushless motors for traction and our Endurance brush DC-based gear motors for the steering and height adjustment.
Pilot Cooling System Pump
Military helicopter pilots can be equipped with special flight suits that incorporate microclimate cooling. Cooling fluid is pumped through the suits by a special pump system driven by a brushless DC motor, keeping the pilot's body temperature at near normal in harsh environmental conditions.
Allied Motion helped the pump and cooling unit manufacturer achieve required system reliability with a compact, custom KinetiMax brushless DC motor solution. Integrated drive electronics in the motor keep connections to a minimum, and the specially designed housing has an IP54 protection level.

Space Station Experiment Module
Allied Motion engineered a large custom 560 mm (22 in.) diameter torque motor with encoder for the International Space Station. The motor was designed to power a 2.5 m (8.2 ft) diameter centrifuge rotor capable of providing artificial gravity levels ranging from 0.001 to 2 g. The intended application of the 1875 kg (2 ton) centrifuge was experimentation in microgravity using such diverse objects as small animals and semiconductor crystals.
Train Door Operators
